Still underestimated by many managers, marketing experts, sales and logistics professionals, the major advantages and potentials inherent in the use of Big Data . A few months ago the Time, a German newspaper, did an extensive report on this . What makes this a wonderful article in the weekly newspaper were the practices that have been gathered from the German economy, the hamburger.
As a reminder and maybe for your next presentation we summarize here again the two most striking examples together :
- From the drugstore chain DM reported the Time, that the retailer used Big Data in a special project to set in and analyze the revenue streams of several years. Since the manager knows how much precisely a branch needs personal labor based on the data received on revenue streams, the employees would benefit because they could plan their operating times much more reliably targeting key times of peak sales. The number of short- arranged special shifts would decrease dramatically.
- The use of the shipping giant Otto goes much further . The Hamburg company improved by using a special software requirements planning . The project does not limit itself to one type of product , but encompassed the entire range. ” According to the company, feeding its software per week with 300 million records – and created over a billion year forecasts on how the sales will develop with individual products in the following days and weeks,” reported the Time . The effects of the computer calculations are impressive. Otto is thus ordering an average of 30 percent fewer goods than before, resulting in less excess goods in the warehouses , bringing savings of tens of millions.
Both examples demonstrate the practical benefits big data can have with the proper application of big data in the enterprise. Not even taking into account the huge opportunities that big data can have in the analysis of consumer behavior and consumption habits. The potentials in these areas are still much higher. More and more companies are now trying to learn with the help of a detailed analysis how their online customers and Facebook fans think, and react. Even if seemingly unimportant, it yields direct knowledge, and positive impact on sales.
